February 1, 2014 – Thanks to the Mexican Consulate of Sacramento, the California Student Aid Commission and Cien Amigos for a very successful ‘Steps to College – Pasos a La Universidad 2014’. I joined thousands of students and families from across Northern California to emphasize the importance of a college education, and to encourage utilization of the many resources offered at this annual event. More than 40 California and Mexican universities were represented, and attendees had the opportunity to participate in workshops and one-on-one counseling regarding admissions and financial aid. The photo of the young lady with Mexican Cónsul General Carlos González Gutiérrez and me is that of Evelyn Zarate-Sanchez. Originally from Sonora Mexico, Evelyn is a high school senior who hopes to study biomedical engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, my alma mater (Go Mustangs!!). I have no doubt that Evelyn, and all the other young people I saw today are going to do great things in life, and it begins with a great college experience. ¡Buena suerte a todos!
